Dolly Mixture

I posted a Dolly Mixture video a few weeks back but I’ve took a notion to post a little more. Dolly Mixture were an all female twee/post-punk/new wave band who existed from 1978 to 1984. Here’s a song from their 1983 album Demonstration Tapes, called Angel Treads.

I highly recommend downloading (or purchasing, if you can find it) Demonstration Tapes. There are 27 tracks and not a single bad one amongst the bunch. There are a bunch of singles and an E.P that are also worth hearing. I’ve heard rumours about a Dolly Mixture documentary, but information is scarce online. If anybody can find it, let me know!

Worst Album Cover Ever

There are plenty of contenders but I think Distortion by The Magnetic Fiels just might have the worst album cover ever. Who in their right mind would even consider using this? Everything about it is disgusting. Those fonts will haunt my fucking dreams for years to come. It actually makes me physically sick to see such poor judgement being exercised. It seems almost too easy to point out how atrocious it is. Stephin Merritt, what the fuck were you thinking?

The best thing about New York City…

In two days time I’m leaving for a trip to New York. Whilst away I will be attending a wedding, doing some recording with friends, playing a few shows, seeing a few shows, eating a lot of pizza, buying a lot of records and just generally having a nice time.

There are plenty of great songs written about New York. This is definitely one of my favourites; New York City by They Might Be Giants.

So romantic!

Make sure there are no distractions, sit down on a comfy chair. If you have a dimmer switch you might want to set it to about halfway. Maybe light some candles if you feel so inclined. It also might be an idea to turn your phone on silent. Once you’re absolutely sure that you’re ready, take a deep breath, press play on the player below and prepare to have your mind well and truly blown.

James sitting in a chair.

The new Julian Casblancas song is totally amazing. Listen to it!

I went to see The Patter Merchants performing their version of Abigail’s Party at Stereo on Monday. I’ve only ever seen Mike Leigh’s TV adaptation (which I love to death) so it was fun to see it performed in the flesh. It was hilarious. I haven’t laughed so much in a long time. If you ever get the chance to see it, please do. I tried to find some clips on YouTube but there were only a couple, neither of which really do it justice. Take my advice and buy the DVD. I’m sure you could get it on Amazon or wherever.

This evening I finally got a chance to see Beautiful Losers, which was screening at the Glasow Centre For Contemporary Art as part the DIY Glasgow festival. For those who don’t know, it’s a documentary from 2008 which focuses on Aaron Rose’s Alleged Gallery and a bunch of artists and filmmakers who were involved, most of which who came from a Skateboarding background. Ed Templeton, Barry McGee, Margaret Kilgallen, Jo Jackson, Chris Johanson, Thomas Campbell, Geoff McFetridge, Mike Mills, Harmony Korine and a few more are featured. It’s pretty inspiring stuff. It made me want to come home and paint. I guess it’ll be out on DVD at some point so pick it up! Here’s the trailer.

Fuck Buttons tomorrow night. Should be trippy. Also, this guy is hot.
