My band, Water Wolves, opened for Wavves at The Captain’s Rest in Glasgow a couple of nights ago. My friend Anne managed to film a couple of songs. Here’s one of them.

Teen Dream, the new album from Baltimore duo Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally, better known as Beach House, is coming out in a couple of months. January 26th 2010 to be precise. As tends to happen these days, the album has leaked already. Here’s one of my favourite songs from it, Lover Of Mine.

Over the next few months the pair are touring Europe, ending with some UK dates in March opening for Grizzly Bear. Go see them. Their live show is quite the experience.

Albums Of The Year 2009

I guess this is a little premature, but I don’t think there’s anything else due to come out this year that would potentially make the list. If something comes out in December that blows my mind I will add it to the list. I’m 99% sure there’s stuff I’ve forgotten about anyway. Also, the order is only approximate. It’s been such a good year for music (as usual) so trying to pick which albums I like more than others has been really hard. This list more or less sums it up.

1. Phoenix – Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
2. Patrick Wolf – The Bachelor
3. Ben Kweller – Changing Horses
4. Bike For Three – More Heart Than Brains
5. Yo La Tengo – Popular Songs
6. Connie Converse – How Sad, How Lovely
7. Tegan and Sara – Sainthood
8. Julian Casablancas- Phrazes For The Young
9. Bill Callahan – Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle
10. Fungi Girls – Seafaring Pyramids
11. Morrissey – Years Of Refusal
12. Cornershop – Judy Sucks A Lemon For Breakfast
13. Nodzzz – Nodzzz
14. The Hidden Cameras – Origin: Orphan
15. Antony & The Johnsons – The Crying Light
16. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart – S/T
17. Wilco – Wilco (The Album)
18. Coconut Records – Davy
19. Still Flyin’ – Never Gonna Touch The Ground
20. Chain & The Gang – Down With Liberty… Up With Chains
21. Yacht – See Mystery Lights
22. Devendra Banhart – What Will We Be
23. Woods – Songs Of Shame
24. Mos Def – The Ecstatic
25. Jay Reatard – Watch Me Fall

I visited Tiny Vices for the first time a while and it’s been given a recent re-design. There’s a bunch of new stuff on there, including these great photographs of young skateboarders by Kenneth Cappello. All the photos were taken in the late eighties while he was still in his teens and have been collected in a book called Acid Drop. Check out the rest of his portfolio on Tiny Vices.

Oh, how the days will rain on you

I just got back from seeing Woods opening for Espers (who were okay but I left early) and The Cave Singers (who are utter shit, not worth watching) and it was stunning. I know their records well but I felt like I was hearing them for the first time. They just took it to a whole other level. It was the kind of show you wish everybody in the world could have seen. Here’s a video of them performing Twisted Tongue live at Cake Shop in New York.

I guess most people will have heard Woods by now, but if you haven’t then please do yourself a favour a get all their records. I spoke to them briefly afterwards and they said they’d be back to the UK in the new year. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

In other news…

See you all there, yeah? Cool.

Dolly Mixture

I posted a Dolly Mixture video a few weeks back but I’ve took a notion to post a little more. Dolly Mixture were an all female twee/post-punk/new wave band who existed from 1978 to 1984. Here’s a song from their 1983 album Demonstration Tapes, called Angel Treads.

I highly recommend downloading (or purchasing, if you can find it) Demonstration Tapes. There are 27 tracks and not a single bad one amongst the bunch. There are a bunch of singles and an E.P that are also worth hearing. I’ve heard rumours about a Dolly Mixture documentary, but information is scarce online. If anybody can find it, let me know!

Worst Album Cover Ever

There are plenty of contenders but I think Distortion by The Magnetic Fiels just might have the worst album cover ever. Who in their right mind would even consider using this? Everything about it is disgusting. Those fonts will haunt my fucking dreams for years to come. It actually makes me physically sick to see such poor judgement being exercised. It seems almost too easy to point out how atrocious it is. Stephin Merritt, what the fuck were you thinking?
