Here are my 10 favourite album covers of 2009. Not all of these are great albums, but they do all have great artwork. The order is fuzzy, but you get the idea. Weirdly, two of the albums have the same title.

1. Reading Rainbow – Mystical Participation

2. Volcano Choir – Unmap

3. Espers – Espers III

4. Say Anything – Say Anything

5. Audacity – Power Drowning

6. Daughters Of The Sun – Rings

7. Wavves – Wavvves

8. Nesey Gallons – Eyes & Eyes & Eyes Ago

9. Sean Bones – Rings

10. Themselves – CrownsDown

I visited Tiny Vices for the first time a while and it’s been given a recent re-design. There’s a bunch of new stuff on there, including these great photographs of young skateboarders by Kenneth Cappello. All the photos were taken in the late eighties while he was still in his teens and have been collected in a book called Acid Drop. Check out the rest of his portfolio on Tiny Vices.

James sitting in a chair.

The new Julian Casblancas song is totally amazing. Listen to it!

I went to see The Patter Merchants performing their version of Abigail’s Party at Stereo on Monday. I’ve only ever seen Mike Leigh’s TV adaptation (which I love to death) so it was fun to see it performed in the flesh. It was hilarious. I haven’t laughed so much in a long time. If you ever get the chance to see it, please do. I tried to find some clips on YouTube but there were only a couple, neither of which really do it justice. Take my advice and buy the DVD. I’m sure you could get it on Amazon or wherever.

This evening I finally got a chance to see Beautiful Losers, which was screening at the Glasow Centre For Contemporary Art as part the DIY Glasgow festival. For those who don’t know, it’s a documentary from 2008 which focuses on Aaron Rose’s Alleged Gallery and a bunch of artists and filmmakers who were involved, most of which who came from a Skateboarding background. Ed Templeton, Barry McGee, Margaret Kilgallen, Jo Jackson, Chris Johanson, Thomas Campbell, Geoff McFetridge, Mike Mills, Harmony Korine and a few more are featured. It’s pretty inspiring stuff. It made me want to come home and paint. I guess it’ll be out on DVD at some point so pick it up! Here’s the trailer.

Fuck Buttons tomorrow night. Should be trippy. Also, this guy is hot.

Misaki Kawai

This evening I stumbled upon the website of Osaka born artist Misaki Kawai. I feel like I might have seen some her work before but I may be wrong. Her website, which you can look at with your eyes here, has more of her bizarre and frequently very cute paintings. If you like kittens or koala bears playing football (which I do) then you’re in for a treat! There are also some drawings (which I wasn’t too keen on, sorry!) and photographs as well as some inventive sculpture work.

Here’s a nice ten minute interview with Misaki from VBS.tv. Her house/studio looks fucking incredible!

On August 25th she has a new book being published by Nieves. There are no pictures from it on the Nieves site yet, but I’m sure it’ll be great.

C.M. Ruiz

C.M. Ruiz is a young artist and graphic designer from Seattle. He has designed gig posters for Crystal Stilts, Jay Reatard and Thee Oh Sees, among others. He has also been responsible for the covers of records by the likes of Fungi Girls and Coconut Coolouts. Here’s his amazing cover for the Fungi Girls ‘Seafaring Pyramids’ 12″.

I can’t seem to find an official website but Ruiz’s Myspace page has over 100 of his posters to delight your eyes. Just don’t waste your time looking at the folder named ‘Artwork’. It’s full of juvenile, embarrassing sketches that I can hardly believe are the work of the same artist responsible for such awesome posters. The less said about the Neko Case and Jenny Lewis watercolour the better.

So yeah… Horrendous, ugly, wretched sketches, beautiful posters and record covers!

Peter Sutherland is a New York City based photographer and filmmaker. Books of his photography have been published by Nieves and Pambook as well as handful of others. He has a new website coming soon but in the meantime you can still view dozens of his incredible photographs at his old website. There are also a few little movie clips to watch, as well as some information about the film projects that he has been involved with.

Whilst I was in New York I picked up a copy of the latest issue of Pinups Magazine from January of this year. I’d actually never heard of it before but it caught my eye amongst the plethora of wonderful things for sale in St. Marks Books. Each mostly text-free issue has beautifully shot erotic photographs of either one or two bear-ish type guys. Each issue can also be taken apart and the pages laid out to make up one life-size photograph. I’ve been checking out their website this afternoon and browsing through images from past issues. If somebody wants to buy me copies of issues 3 and 7, that would be absolutely grand. Those links are very much NSFW, by the way!

Adrian Fleet is a young illustrator from London. His work is occasionally a little cartoon-ish for my tastes but there are a fair few lovely pieces on his website. Definitely worth a look if you like cute, furry, big-eyed things. And hey, who doesnt?

Team Macho

Team Macho is an art collective currently stationed in Toronto, comprising Stephen Appleby-Barr, Nicholas Aoki, Chris Buchan, Lauchi Redi and Jacob Whibley. In 2007 Magic Pony published their first collection of work, Fancy Action Now which I count among the best art books that I own. Some of their stuff reminds me of Marcel Dzama, particularly the bits and pieces you see in his sketchbooks, but it’s perhaps even more ‘out there’ than the majority of his work. Where Dzama often uses the same characters more than once in different pieces, each Team Macho drawing, painting or collage is completely different. Some of their stuff is breathtakingly beautiful, some of it is laugh out loud funny.

The guys have recently put some prints (including one of the image above) up for sale via their online store. Sadly at $100-150 a pop, although reasonably priced, they’re a little out of my league for the time being. Anybody want to buy me one?

Mikko Rantanen is a Finnish artist who currently lives in Berlin. The majority of his work is collage based although he has done bits and pieces in other fields, including some commissioned illustration work for Paramount Comedy among others. He has also designed the covers for a few releases by Howling Bells, all of which are lovely. Not sure what the music is like but they sure look pretty.
